Something is out there:
It says “Your best won’t suffice.”
Once, I believed that.
It used to torture me
images of loves lost
chances missed
dreams of dying young
The betrayal of my hairline,
The doubling of my chin
a transformation into my father complete
save for lack of accomplishment
by way of arrested development
Cursed with optimism
and little self-control
